Scientific research

The development of the SimPlaNeR project, Simulation Platform for Network Resilience, is mainly informed by the scientific output of two research projects, namely, the FONDECYT 1220292 project, Multiscale earthquake risk mitigation of healthcare networks using seismic isolation, which is currently ongoing, and the FONDECYT 1170836 project, SIBER-RISK: Simulation Based Earthquake Risk and Resilience of Interdependent Systems and Networks, which has already concluded. The SimPlaNeR project is also informed by other related researches.

ANID/FONDECYT/1220292 Project (ACTIVE)

The FONDECYT 1220292 project, Multiscale earthquake risk mitigation of healthcare networks using seismic isolation, aims to study the impact of seismic isolation on the operation of Chilean health systems, with special emphasis on Primary Health Care, hospitals and the level of regional health service. Stages of this project consider the detailed modeling of elastomeric and frictional seismic isolations. In the literature, these models are still unable to reproduce certain phenomena, such as scragging and Mullin effects. In this sense, part of the research challenge consists of the development of phenomenological models that consider these effects and allow obtaining a more realistic representation of the behavior of the seismic isolation.

In addition to the above, the project also aims to estimate the inelastic response of hospitals and medical equipment to determine their behavior in the face of seismic movements precisely. This will allow us to define fragility curves and damage states more realistically.

Understanding the seismic behavior of health facilities and medical infrastructure, project 1220292 then proposes to study and understand how this physical impact affects the quality of medical care provided, especially regarding emergency care. Additionally, the project also aims to determine the increase in demand for health care due to the occurrence of earthquakes.

ANID/FONDECYT/1170836 Project (completed)

The objective of the late FONDECYT 1170836 project, SIBER-RISK: Simulation Based Earthquake Risk and Resilience of Interdependent Systems and Networks, was to study the behavior of critical infrastructures, such as the electrical, drinking water and transportation networks, in the face of seismic hazard. To do this, the modeling of these systems was combined using their physical models (traditionally used in engineering), network models (graph theory) and graphic models (in the statistical or machine learning sense).

Despite the SIBER-RISK project is over, its scientific output is still available in its website: https://www.siberrisk.cl. A particularly valuable product has been its Strong Motion Seismic Database, which is available here: https://siberrisk.ing.puc.cl/StrongMotionDatabase.
